How to Customize a Link

Make your shortened URLs memorable and brand-friendly by customizing the slug (the unique part after the domain).

Custom slugs offer several benefits:

  1. Paste your long URL in the "URL to shorten" field
  2. Enter your desired slug in the "Custom slug" field
  3. Preview your complete shortened URL
  4. Click "Create" to finalize

Example:

Long URL: https://mybusiness.com/products/winter-sale-2026
Custom slug: winter-sale
Result: https://snipzr.com/winter-sale

To customize an existing link:

  1. Go to your Dashboard (or, click your profile icon → Links)
  2. Find the link you want to customize
  3. Click the ︙ icon (next to the link) → Edit Link
  4. Change the slug in the "Custom Slug" field
  5. Click "Update"

Note: Changing the slug creates a new short URL. The old one will no longer work unless you create a redirect.

Slug Requirements​

What's Allowed​

✅ Valid characters:

  • Lowercase letters (a-z)
  • Uppercase letters (A-Z)
  • Numbers (0-9)
  • Hyphens (-)
  • Underscores (_)

✅ Valid examples:

  • spring-2026
  • Product_Launch
  • q1-report
  • sale2026

What's Not Allowed​

❌ Invalid:

  • Spaces ( )
  • Special characters (@, #, $, %, etc.)
  • Reserved words (admin, api, docs, etc.)
  • Slugs already in use

❌ Invalid examples:

  • my link (contains space)
  • sale@2026 (contains @)
  • #trending (starts with #)
  • admin (reserved word)

Length Limits​

  • Minimum: 3 characters
  • Maximum: 1024 characters
  • Recommended: 5-20 characters for best usability

❌ Avoid:

Checking Slug Availability​

During Creation​

If your desired slug is taken, Snipzr will notify you immediately.

If Slug Is Taken​

Try these alternatives:

Add numbers:

demo → demo2, demo2026

Add hyphens:

demo → my-demo, demo-v2

Be more specific:

demo → product-demo, video-demo

Add location/audience:

demo → demo-us, demo-b2b

Troubleshooting​

Slug Rejected​

Problem: Custom slug not accepted

Common causes:

  • Contains invalid characters
  • Already in use by you or another user
  • Too short (< 3 characters) or too long (> 1024)
  • Uses reserved keyword

Solution:

  • Check for special characters
  • Try alternative slug
  • Verify length requirements
  • Avoid reserved words (api, admin, docs, etc.)

Problem: Customized link gives 404 error

Possible reasons:

  • Slug was changed
  • Link was deleted
  • Link disabled
  • Account issue

Solution:

  • Check dashboard for current slug
  • Verify link exists
  • Ensure link is enabled
  • Ensure subscription is active
  • Contact support if needed
